and funny stories filled the room with laughter. A perfect evening to start the Christmas holidays.

November Meeting

Watton Society – Report of our November Meeting.

Are you aware you can have clematis flowering more or less all year round.

This is what we found out when Peter Skeggs-Gooch of Thorncroft Nurseries gave us a three part talk on growing and caring for clematis. The nursery only does mail order now, but still guarantees quality first and foremost.

Some of the flowers mentioned were evergreens “Freckles” and “Winter Beauty”, flowering from October to February.

Springtime “Markhams Pink” and “Amber” voted best in show 2016. These will flower twice, early, and if cut back, later in the same year.

Summertime “Liberty” can be cut and will come back again. “Jackmanii Alba” are doubles and come back as singles.

Late in the season you can grow “Jackmanii Purpurea” which flowers once.

Clematis which don’t climb but are good for ground cover. “Cassandra” are single stems, “Lambton Park” will give you hedge cover. “Rehderiana” will turn drab doorways into a thing of beauty. Clematis will grow well in almost anything, patio pots, old baths, cracked toilets. Pruning is no problem, tidy, light or hard. Free advice from your supplier will help.

A very interesting evening, very well presented, enjoyed by all.

Our next meeting is on Wednesday 17th January 2018 at the Watton Christian Community Centre at 7.45pm when the talk will be “Art Deco – Ocean Liners” presented by Genista Davidson. Visitors £2.50 for more information look at our new website. www.wattonsociety.org.uk

Report of Watton Society’s September Meeting

Watton Society’s evening of “Grim Tales and Dark Deeds in Norfolk” by Neil Storey began with a description of the various iron work used in restraining people for what ever reason, sometimes very little.  How the hangmans rope was worked, while looking at one.  This was followed by stories of crimes committed, also of course the witch finder general well known in Norfolk.  An exciting evening for all who attended.

Our next meeting  is on Wednesday 18th October at 7.45pm at Watton Christian Community Centre. It will be the  AGM followed by a speaker from the Project Linus, Norfolk. Talking about theirhistory, what they do and how they do it.  All are welcome.  Look out for the posters.
