Our first meeting of the year was a very interesting talk given by Gavin Bickerton-Jones. His talk along with some very interesting images was entitled African Safari.

Gavin told us about one of his trips to a reserve on the east cost of Africa used mainly by photographers, with special hides and a device he created to photograph wildlife at ground level whilst travelling in a safari vehicle. This gave us some very interesting photos of lions and other creatures from the angle they would see each other.

Linda Benton came and gave us a talk about her career in the metropolitan mounted police.

When she started the horses had not received specific training for police work and were not fitted with the safety items we expect today, for example they were not fitted with eye shields/blinkers, and the officers did not have safety hard hats, nor did they have truncheons.

They were initially used in crowd control, like football matches, demonstrations etc. As one mounted officer would have the same effect as a dozen officers on foot.

She told us of how these things changed through her career, she brought along some items of memorabilia, which we could look at on the table after her talk.

George Collins came and gave us a talk on Military Hats along with many examples. George showed us the hat, explained its history and use then passed it around the audience to examine and if wished they could try the hat on.

He moved on from hats that were likened to helmets to soft hats and bearskins ending with some caps and berets.

He showed us many images some of which had taken him hours of wating for and some by his own admission by luck. He finished his presentation with some interesting facts like how to tell a male from a female kingfisher and images of kingfishers feeding their young.

Our February meeting took place on the 15 February when Anne Mason of the Friends of Thetford Forest came and gave us an illustrated talk about the timber of the forest, its wildlife, heritage, and recreation associated with the forest. She told us of the types of timber planted in the forest and its management of replacing new trees. How it managed and encouraged wildlife to live within the forest. She went on to explain how the forest came to be with the formation of The Forestry Commission, and the public access along with it recreation site and activities that take place within in the forest. We are hoping to arrange an early evening visit to the visitor’s centre along with a walk in July, more details to follow.
